Shardul Shroff is the founder and executive chairman of the firm, with over 45 years of experience across a wide spectrum of law, including mergers and acquisitions, financial regulatory practice, insolvency and bankruptcy, commercial litigation and arbitration, capital markets, disinvestments, and banking and finance. He has been instrumental in establishing several new and emerging practices at the firm, including ESG, artificial intelligence and TMT.

He is a key member of two government of India committees – the Insolvency Law Committee and the Company Law Committee (2022-23), which continuously review and strengthen India’s insolvency and company law frameworks. He has also been appointed as a member of the IBBI Expert Committee to propose a comprehensive framework for the use of mediation under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC).

Shroff has been involved in numerous landmark insolvency matters before the Supreme Court of India, contributing significantly to the development of insolvency jurisprudence, as well as company law and arbitration law. His recent contributions through high-powered government of India committees include reports on cross-border insolvency, mediation in insolvency, and reforms to the Arbitration Act.

Widely respected for his thoroughness, innovation, problem-solving ability, and deep regulatory insight, Shroff has undertaken extensive work on the reorganisation, decentralisation, democratisation, and modernisation of legal practice in India. He has also driven innovation in legal delivery by developing technology-enabled solutions to improve data accuracy, financial information sharing, and overall efficiency within the firm.

Among his many recognitions, Shroff is a recipient of the National Law Day Award from the president of India for his exceptional contribution to corporate law and leadership in advancing India’s corporate legal practice to global standards. He has been recognised as one of The Gamechangers of India by The Economic Times and received the Lex Falcon Global Lifetime Achievement Award, 2023.

IFLR1000 recognises Shroff as a “Market Leader” across multiple practice areas, including M&A, restructuring and insolvency, banking and finance, project finance, and capital markets. He was conferred an honorary doctorate in Law by Amity University, Haryana, in February 2024, honoured with Vidhi Samman in February 2025, and received the ACES 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award in November 2025.

As executive chairman, Shroff oversees the firm’s modernisation and leads major litigation, regulatory, and transactional matters with far-reaching impact on India’s commercial laws.
